J. Lee Williams is an award-winning Film, VR, and Commercial Director with over 20 years of experience in the entertainment and production industry. In addition to directing, he has been an active Visual Effects Supervisor since 2010, helping directors bring their visions to life.

INVALID SYMBOL was founded in 2023 with a mission to incorporate key voices from traditionally underrepresented equity-seeking groups. As a leading studio at the convergence of entertainment, digital media and technology industries that strives to redefine expectations for storytelling, innovation and accessibility, which it applies to its latest stable of original Intellectual Property, games, apps, linear content, experimental experiences, next-generation tech research partnerships and AI-powered enterprise solutions.

He founded OCCUPIED VR, where he directed the award-winning CUT-OFF VR, a VICE Media and CFC co-production featuring Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s visit to Northern Indigenous communities. CUT-OFF was nominated for a Canadian Screen Award in 2016. J. Lee has also developed immersive experiences for brands such as FIFA, Facebook, Nike, Intel, Lincoln, Warner Brothers, Sony, Samsung, and Vice Media.

Other notable achievements under OCCUPIED VR include co-creating and directing the LIGHTCATCHER digital series for Ridley Scott’s RSA FILMS and BODY.MIND.CHANGE, a transmedia film starring David Cronenberg for CFC Media Lab.

J. Lee is also the founder of 1188 Films. Commercial directing credits include clients such as Coca-Cola, Bell Media, Much Music, and ushering MTV towards their 29 Promax win for visual effects and animation.

His latest work as Interactive Director on SURVIVORMAN VR recently won the Canadian Screen Award for Best Immersive Experience – Fiction.
